Principal’s message

The first quarter of the 2011-2012 school year is drawing to a close and it has been a successful beginning to the year here at Heather Ridge School. The staff has been involved is several training programs including Crisis Prevention training, student engagement strategies in the classroom, and we are beginning to learn about the upcoming Common Core Curriculum. We also have our new climbing wall installed in our gymnasium and training on the safe use of the wall has occurred.

We had a very successful family dinner during parent-teacher conferences and I want to thank all the families who attended and all the staff who worked so hard to provide the dinner and games for children. We even had one of our regular substitute teachers assist that evening!   49% of the parents of our enrolled students attended conferences.

Several of our students visited Artomatic in Downtown Frederick where two of our students had paintings exhibited. Two of our staff also exhibited, so it was a wonderful opportunity for our students to see various forms of Art and to see the talents of two of our staff members.

The second quarter of the school year brings exciting opportunities, also. The Maryland Speakers Bureau will be here on November 15th speaking to our 9th graders about the importance of a high school diploma. This is a state wide program and HRS will participate for the first time this year. We will also have students visiting CTC and hopefully becoming interested in a program there for the future.

Please visit us during American Education Week – November 14th to 18th to see all our educational opportunities for our students and see the staff in action teaching. We have activities planned daily to recognize different people and parts of the program.

Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving and Winter Holiday,

Denise Flora
